I love drawing people! Facial expressions, outfits, backgrounds, they have always been my favourite things to draw. So why don’t I do it more often?
My ‘Girls in Shirts’ series is going to remedy that. These girls are plucked from my imagination, I think they are all friends from around the world. While I was doodling away I noticed they were all wearing different styles of shirts, so would make the perfect series. I kept the colour palette fairly limited for each of the four portraits so they would work well individually or in a set. I’m loving the combination of pale blue and peach at the moment.
I added a lot of painterly texture and had fun making the patterned wallpaper backgrounds, the hair textures were really fun to paint. I did my initial sketches with watercolour and a fine brush, then made a lot of marks and patterns using gouache, scanned all these in and added a few digital touches and made colour edits in Photoshop. You can see my initial sketches and colour studies below the final artworks. If you like my shirt wearing ladies take a look in the illustration section of my portfolio for more inspiration.
Which style of shirt is your favourite? Peter pan collar? Sailor? Classic?
